Prof. Dr. Martin Welsch is Chief Technology Advisor emeritus at the German IBM Research & Development Center in Böblingen near Stuttgart. In this function his special emphasis was not merely on technological aspects. He constantly focused on societal and personal effects as well. He has long-standing experience with strategic consulting on the CxO level for technology and innovation management. With his combination from industrial and academic development, research and teaching, he was appointed in 2001 to become an honorary professor for applied Computer Science at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Since retiring from IBM beginning in 2016 he has focused his attention especially on the comprehensible transfer of knowledge about current hot IT topics also for non IT savvy client.
Interests
For more than three decades in a world-renowned IT research and development organization I was able to witness first hand new developments and trends, ultimately as Chief Technology Advisor, as well as to actively participate in some of them.
The aforementioned role also dealt intensively, inter alia, with the annually published IBM Global Technology Outlook (GTO). Over a 3-10 year horizon this considered developments in IT, which have the potential to massively modify our industry, business models and even society.
I have been persistently engaged with the varying hot topics from IT, and naturally beyond the scope of IBM. During many discussions and presentations on these topics for IBM and during my intensive lecture and consulting activities, I became ever more aware of the significance of a broader view and a comprehensible transfer of these contents especially to decision makers, but not necessarily IT-savy audiences.
Naturally in the daily execution of routine business, time and leisure are often lacking to devote one`s self to comprehensive topics and their ramifications. Many developments, such as the following examples demonstrate, are not intuitively understandable by their very nature and often their consequences can not even yet be anticipated.
Hardware Development

What are the concepts behind them and what are the special opportunities they have to offer?

- But at the same time we often don’t feel entirely comfortable with it.
